Lawnmower Utility Carts

A Lawnmower Utility Trailer is a Great Alternative to the Standard Wheelbarrow

By Mark J. Donovan

If you have a sit down lawnmower you may want to consider buying a lawnmower utility cart. Lawnmower utility carts are a great alternative to a wheelbarrow.

Besides not having to push around a heavily loaded wheelbarrow, and nearly breaking your back in the process, a lawnmower utility cart enables you to get the hauling job done faster. Lawnmower utility carts (a.k.a. lawnmower utility trailers) come in a variety of sizes and range in hauling capacity from 7 to 18 cubic feet.

Not long ago I purchased a lawnmower utility cart to tow behind my John Deere X304 tractor lawnmower. I wound up purchasing John Deere’s 10P utility cart as it offered decent hauling capacity with a reasonably small footprint for storing in my garage.

I had debated the purchase over several months, however after pulling out my wheelbarrow to haul some mulch and seeing the wheelbarrow tire flat again I decided it was time.

The particular utility cart I purchased has a load capacity of 10 cubic feet and 650 lbs, and is manufactured out of a ¼” heavy duty plastic. What I really like about it, is it has an easy dump release lever that allows me to tip it back to quickly unload its contents. This neat little feature, along with its 10 cubic feet of hauling capacity, made fast work of my mulch spreading project.

The only issue I have found with my new lawnmower utility cart is a design flaw in the utility carts tongue.

I noticed after using it that when I had apparently made sharp turns with the tractor lawnmower the utility cart’s tongue wound up slightly bending the trailer hitch plate on the back of my tractor. Consequently I have to make sure that I do not make quite as tight turns with my X304 tractor lawnmower when hauling the utility cart.

So if you want to lighten the load on your back, and already have a sit down lawnmower, consider making the additional couple hundred dollar investment in a lawnmower utility cart.

Here is my John Deere lawnmower and lawnmower utility cart.

Besides saving wear and tear on your body you’ll save time hauling around mulch, topsoil, grass clippings and other yard and garden materials and equipment.
