Fall is the Perfect Season for Building a Garage Addition

Break Ground on Your Attached Garage Addition Before the Snow Flies

By Mark J. Donovan

One of the best times of the year to build a garage addition is in the fall. The weather is cooling off a bit, the insects have died off, and winter is just a few months around the corner. Also, contractors begin to get a little hungry again as their spring and summer projects begin to wrap up.

Building a garage addition in the fall also enables you to protect your vehicles during the upcoming winter. Moreover, if you live in a colder climate a garage addition provides a warmer and cleaner space for working on vehicles rather than having to stand outside in the bitter cold.

A garage addition also allows you to work on various workshop projects that you may not otherwise be able to do during the cold winter months.

Before calling in the contractors to give you quotes on building a garage addition do your homework first. Generate your own garage addition plans first, be it with a home design computer software program or simply with paper and pencil. Make sure you spec your garage addition large enough.

More often than not homeowners who build an attached garage addition regret afterwards that they did not make the garage addition bigger. If financially possible consider building a 3 bay garage addition. The third bay is excellent for storing lawnmowers and bikes, if not a third car. Also, make sure to include sufficient windows in your garage addition. In addition, consider a roof line that will enable you to build finished living space above the garage addition, or at minimum, a walk up attic area for storing things.

Garage Addition Bid Sheet

In regards to finding a qualified contractor to build your garage addition, my “Garage Addition Bid Sheet” is an excellent resource for helping you plan your garage addition and find the most qualified contractor for the job. It provides a detailed questionnaire that you give to prospective contractors to fill out. Upon receipt of the filled out questionnaires, you can compare them against the advice I include in the “Notes to the Homeowner” section of the bid sheet. After comparing the contractor questionnaire responses with my notes, you can clearly identify who’s the right contractor for building your garage addition. It also includes example costs for the overall project and for different phases of it.

So take advantage of the fall season and break ground on your garage addition plans. You’ll be thanking yourself during the ensuing winter months.
