Basement Remodeling Contractor Hiring Guide

Finishing a Basement is an Inexpensive Way to Gain More Living Space, If you Hire the Right Basement Remodeling Contractor

By Mark J. Donovan

My basement remodeling bid sheet is effectively a hiring guide for finding experienced and professional basement remodeling contractors. It is a guide to help homeowners from accidentally hiring the wrong basement remodeling contractor and ending up with cost overruns, schedule slips, and much heartache. I wrote the basement remodeling hiring guide after many years of dealing with home remodeling contractors and completing many of my own home remodeling and construction projects.

Ultimately the basement remodeling contractor hiring guide helps ensure your basement renovation project goes smoothly and is completed to your plans and vision, without the frustration and headaches of dealing with an incompetent contractor.

Choosing to finish your basement is an excellent solution for adding more living space to your home. However, prior to investing too much time into your basement remodeling plans, it is important that you honestly answer this one question first.

Is your basement dry? If it is not then you must resolve this problem first. A wet basement, or a basement that has high moisture in it, will ultimately lead to problems down the road with your finished basement. If your basement has ever flooded, occasionally springs small leaks after a rain storm, or simply has high moisture levels in it, you first need to address the sources that cause these problems prior to kicking off the construction of your basement remodeling project. If you don’t, you’ll be wasting serious money on your basement remodeling project.

Solving wet basement problems may simply include waterproofing the basement floor and the interior foundation walls.

For more serious basement water problems, however, more expensive solutions may be required. For example the soil around the perimeter of the foundation walls may need to be temporarily removed and a perimeter drain installed. In addition, the exterior foundation wall may also be sealed.

So prior to kicking of a basement remodeling project, make sure to confirm that your basement is indeed capable of finishing.

Then, using my basement remodeling contractor hiring guide, find a basement remodeling contractor who is truly experienced and professional.

By following through on these two pieces of advice you’ll end up with a finished basement that you’ll truly love.
