Direct Vent Heating Systems

Eliminate Cold Spots within your Home with a Direct Vent Heating System

By Mark J. Donovan

Direct vent heating systems provide a number of advantages over other supplemental home heating solutions. A common occurrence with home additions is insufficient heating. Direct vent heating systems can provide supplemental heating to a room addition at a much lower installation cost than increasing the size of the main home heating system and running new pipes or duct work to the addition.

Oil or propane fueled direct vent heating systems are also much less expensive to operate than electric heating systems. In addition, unlike a wood stove or coal stove, they do not require constant nursing to make sure they are loaded with wood and that the chimney is clean from creosote buildup.

Direct vent heating systems also offer a number of other advantages and features. First, since they are direct vent they do not require a chimney or special construction thus saving on installation and maintenance costs. Second, they are extremely efficient. Many direct vent heating systems yield efficiencies in the 80%+ range.

They are also deemed safe combustion systems by the American Gas Association (AGA) and Canadian Gas Association (CGA), due to the fact that they are sealed combustion systems and use electronic ignition systems. With direct vent heating systems there are no pilot lights or exposed flames to worry about.

In terms of unique features offered with direct vent heating systems there are quite a few to choose from. Many models offer built-in humidification, programmable setback capabilities and whisper quiet circulation fans.

They are also available in a number of different sizes, capacities, and styles to match any type of home décor.

Direct vent heating systems are available in a variety of BTU (British Thermal Unit) and heating area capacities. Various direct vent heating system models can produce between 14,000 to 40,000 BTUs and heat areas from 200 to 2,000 square feet.

Direct vent heating systems are also available for providing on-demand hot water.

So if you are looking to provide supplemental heating to your home or home addition, consider installing a direct vent heating system.
