In addition, I had to buy 1\u201dx4\u201d pre-primed lumber to replace the exterior window trims, as well as window casing molding for the window interiors. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">I also had to buy several feet of Z-strip flashing per window, galvanized nails, shims, and exterior grade window caulk. The total window material costs added up to around $400 per window. <\/span><\/td>\n<td style=\"text-align: center;\" width=\"1%\"><\/td>\n<td style=\"text-align: center;\" width=\"49%\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/B00KVQ3KJQ\/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325&amp;creativeASIN=B00KVQ3KJQ&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;tag=wwwhomeadditi-20&amp;linkId=26474c347566b4509d679d3c80071cf8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/\/ws-na.amazon-adsystem.com\/widgets\/q?_encoding=UTF8&amp;MarketPlace=US&amp;ASIN=B00KVQ3KJQ&amp;ServiceVersion=20070822&amp;ID=AsinImage&amp;WS=1&amp;Format=_SL250_&amp;tag=wwwhomeadditi-20\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"border: none !important; margin: 0px !important;\" src=\"\/\/ir-na.amazon-adsystem.com\/e\/ir?t=wwwhomeadditi-20&amp;l=am2&amp;o=1&amp;a=B00KVQ3KJQ\" alt=\"\" width=\"1\" height=\"1\" border=\"0\" \/><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">My labor was \u201cfree\u201d, so the overall window installation costs for outright replacing 10 old windows was round $4,000.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Rolling forward a few years to 2011, I had similar windows installed by a major home improvement center whose name I will not mention.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">The total cost for installing effectively 5 same size windows, with window trim included, was just over $8,000. That\u2019s right, half the windows installed, compared to my own window installations in 2006, for twice the price. Admittedly the windows had gone up in price to around $500 each, including grilles and screen. However, the rest of the window installation costs were labor and the home improvement center\u2019s markup for their \u201ccontractor management efforts\u201d, with the latter being the bulk of the additional costs.<\/span><\/p>\n<table style=\"width: 100%;\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td style=\"text-align: left;\" width=\"50%\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">This said, to be fair to this particular home improvement center, their window installation cost estimate was on par with the competition. So it was market price and I was not going in blind when I signed their contract.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">If, on the other hand, I had installed the 5 windows myself, I had estimated my DIY window installation costs would have been somewhere around $650 per window. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">The $650 figure included trim and other material needed.
