There are two additional benefits of including a crawl space foundation in your first floor addition plans. <\/span><\/p>\n<\/td>\n<td style=\"text-align: left;\" width=\"1%\"><\/td>\n<td width=\"49%\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-18719 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/homeadditionplus.com\/dev\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/Family_Room_Addition_1-300x224.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"224\" srcset=\"https:\/\/homeadditionplus.com\/dev\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/Family_Room_Addition_1-300x224.jpg 300w, https:\/\/homeadditionplus.com\/dev\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/Family_Room_Addition_1.jpg 560w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Though not a complete basement, the crawl space does afford some storage benefits. In addition, it\u2019s less expensive to construct then a full blown basement since there is less concrete required.<\/span><br \/>\n<script async src=\"\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js\"><\/script><br \/>\n<!-- 468x60_below_Author_Name --><br \/>\n<ins class=\"adsbygoogle\" style=\"display: inline-block; width: 468px; height: 60px;\" data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-3988490936633155\" data-ad-slot=\"5936342260\"><\/ins><br \/>\n<script>\n(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});\n<\/script><\/p>\n<table style=\"width: 100%;\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td style=\"text-align: left;\" width=\"50%\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Though I\u2019ve built all of my first floor additions with wood lumber, alternatively you can consider concrete block construction. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Up here in New England you rarely see concrete block construction, however I have seen at least some crawl space foundation walls constructed out of concrete block. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Concrete block construction for first floor additions is more commonly seen down south.<\/span><\/td>\n<td width=\"3%\"><\/td>\n<td width=\"47%\"><a href=\"http:\/\/homeadditionplus.com\/dev\/home_addition_bid_sheets\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-381 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/homeadditionplus.com\/dev\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/Home_Addition_Bid_Sheets_Ad_250x250.jpg\" alt=\"Home Addition Bid Sheets\" width=\"250\" height=\"250\" srcset=\"https:\/\/homeadditionplus.com\/dev\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/Home_Addition_Bid_Sheets_Ad_250x250.jpg 250w, https:\/\/homeadditionplus.com\/dev\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/Home_Addition_Bid_Sheets_Ad_250x250-150x150.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 250px) 100vw, 250px\" \/><\/a><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><strong>First Floor Addition Exterior Aesthetics<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Often when planning a first floor addition homeowners focus on the size of the addition and the interior space.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Though these are important considerations they need to be balanced with the exterior aesthetics and how the home addition ties into the existing home. The first floor addition should be sized proportional to the existing home for example. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">In addition, it\u2019s key to match the exterior siding to the rest of the home. For example, you don\u2019t want to have a vinyl sided addition while the rest of the home is wood clapboard. If on the other hand the main part of the home has brick facing, then using wood or vinyl siding on the first floor addition can work, if the right colors are chosen.<\/span><\/p>\n<table style=\"width: 100%;\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td style=\"text-align: left;\" width=\"50%\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><strong>Exterior Door and Window Location and Selection are also Key<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">For example, you want to make sure to use the same size and style windows on the first floor addition if they are to be visible with the other windows on the main house. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Also any window grille work should be the same. Similarly exterior door selection should be the same, or at least complement the rest of the home.<\/span><\/td>\n<td width=\"3%\"><\/td>\n<td width=\"47%\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-799 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/homeadditionplus.com\/dev\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/First_Floor_Addition-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"Building a first floor addition\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/homeadditionplus.com\/dev\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/First_Floor_Addition-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/homeadditionplus.com\/dev\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/First_Floor_Addition.jpg 640w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><strong>Roofing<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Roof design is also a major consideration with a first floor addition.\u00a0It\u2019s important that the home addition roof meld in well with the existing home, whether it be melding into an existing roof line or abutting an exterior wall of the main home.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">The three main types of roof designs to consider are shed, hip, or gable. Use the roof style and roof pitch that best melds into the existing home. Also, make sure to select roof shingles that match the existing roof shingles of the home. If the first floor addition\u2019s roof is attaching directly to the main roof you may have no choice but to shingle the entire roof, room addition and main roof, to prevent any type of visual shingle seam.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><strong>Flooring<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">When considering flooring for your first floor addition, keep in mind that carpeting is probably your cheapest solution. Wood flooring and ceramic tile flooring will cost quite a bit more, but it will look better, it\u2019s easier to maintain, and future potential homebuyers will value it more than the carpet.<\/span><\/p>\n<table border=\"0\" width=\"100%\" cellspacing=\"2\" cellpadding=\"2\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td width=\"50%\">\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><strong>Heating and Cooling<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Another major concern when building a first floor addition is the home\u2019s heating and cooling system. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Often when building a first floor addition the existing heating and cooling system will be insufficient for the increase in living space. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">You may have to include in your home addition budget funds for installing a larger heating\/cooling system, or alternatively installing supplemental heating and cooling in the home addition itself.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/td>\n<td width=\"50%\">\n<div align=\"center\">\n<div style=\"background: url('http:\/\/homeadditionplus.com\/images\/Home_Addition_form_Ad_Small_rev1.jpg') no-repeat top; margin-left: 10px; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-top: 0px; height: 190px; width: 275px;\">\n<form action=\"http:\/\/homeadditionplus.com\/UHI-info\/Additions.htm#form\" method=\"get\"><input style=\"float: left; width: 80px; margin: 110px -255px 50px 165px;\" name=\"PC\" size=\"20\" type=\"text\" \/><br \/>\n<input style=\"float: right; background: url('http:\/\/homeadditionplus.com\/images\/homeadditionplus-btn-next.gif'); height: 34px; width: 91px; border: 0px solid #000000; ; margin-left: 0; margin-right: 25px; margin-top: 130px; margin-bottom: 0px;\" type=\"submit\" value=\"\" \/><\/form>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><strong>Electric<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Finally, in regards to electric, depending upon the size of the first floor addition you may need to add 1 to 3 more circuits to the electric panel.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Check to see if the existing main circuit panel can support the additional circuits.
