Do you have any advice on how to connect a new light to old wires?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><strong>Answer:<\/strong> DG, the lack of a ground wire in electrical boxes on older homes is a common situation. If your home\u2019s <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/homeadditionplus.com\/dev\/home-insulation\/electrical-outlet-switch-sealers\/\"><strong><span style=\"color: #0000ff; text-decoration: underline;\">electrical outlets<\/span><\/strong><\/a><\/span> are two prong chances are there is no ground wire in your electrical boxes.<\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Older cable either lacked a ground wire altogether or in some cases the <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/homeadditionplus.com\/dev\/electrical\/roughing-in-electrical-wiring\/\"><strong><span style=\"color: #0000ff; text-decoration: underline;\">external sheathing<\/span><\/strong><\/a><\/span> itself, which was made out of metal in some cases, acted as the ground.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">If the electrical box that houses the wire for the old light is metal, and the cable sheathing is made out of metal, it is very likely that the electrical box is grounded via the metal sheathing. Also, if the electrical box is metal, and the cable does not include a metal sheathing it may be possible that there was a ground wire in the cable and it was attached to the back side of the electrical box.<\/span><\/p>\n<table style=\"width: 100%;\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td style=\"text-align: left;\" width=\"50%\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Inspect the electrical box for this type of situation. The only downside is that without the ground wire there is no protection for a <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/homeadditionplus.com\/dev\/electrical\/electrical-grounding-wire-systems\/\"><strong><span style=\"color: #0000ff; text-decoration: underline;\">circuit fault condition<\/span><\/strong><\/a><\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Your only other alternative is to pull new cable, which includes a ground wire, from the circuit panel box to the light and light switch.
