In the end, he chose to have installed a Kohler generator by Generator Connection, Inc., a company located in Barrington, New Hampshire.<\/em><\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><strong>Integrated Managed Load Sharing vs Not<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">I looked at two whole house generators to install on my property, a Kohler Generator and a Generac Generator.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">In the end I decided to purchase the Kohler Generator because it had a key feature that helped keep my overall whole house generator installation costs lower. What really sold me on the Kohler generator was the fact that its Automatic Transfer Switch had integrated load management sharing, whereas the Generac generator did not.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Whole House Generator Installation Tips Video\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Wo6lrk8NAns?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Consequently with the Generac solution, I would have had to buy either a large 22KW generator with no load sharing required, or a 16KW generator with remote load sharing boxes installed in my home.<\/span><\/p>\n<table style=\"width: 100%;\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td style=\"text-align: left;\" width=\"50%\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><strong>What is managed load sharing?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Load sharing allows you to have up to several high current carrying loads that are not absolutely critical to have running during a power outage, e.g. a clothes dryer, an air conditioner, oven, etc. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">So for example with load sharing, you could have the dryer, air conditioner and oven on a load sharing circuit, so that in the event that one or two of them were on while the generator was operating, the automatic transfer switch wouldn\u2019t allow the second or third item to turn on.\u00a0<\/span><\/td>\n<td style=\"text-align: center;\" width=\"1%\"><\/td>\n<td style=\"text-align: center;\" width=\"49%\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/B0046AS0JS\/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325&amp;creativeASIN=B0046AS0JS&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;tag=wwwhomeadditi-20&amp;linkId=3d9f372816898391b595ebbe3d940825\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/\/ws-na.amazon-adsystem.com\/widgets\/q?_encoding=UTF8&amp;MarketPlace=US&amp;ASIN=B0046AS0JS&amp;ServiceVersion=20070822&amp;ID=AsinImage&amp;WS=1&amp;Format=_SL250_&amp;tag=wwwhomeadditi-20\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"border: none !important; margin: 0px !important;\" src=\"\/\/ir-na.amazon-adsystem.com\/e\/ir?t=wwwhomeadditi-20&amp;l=am2&amp;o=1&amp;a=B0046AS0JS\" alt=\"\" width=\"1\" height=\"1\" border=\"0\" \/><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">As a result of the managed load sharing a smaller generator can be used to power the house, thus saving you from having to buy a more expensive whole house generator.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">So in my case I chose the 14KW Kohler generator with the integrated load sharing feature built into the automatic transfer switch. The cost savings over the 22KW Generac generator, or the 16KW version with external load management boxes was around 40%. I also had a concern with reduced system reliability with having multiple boxes located in and around the house for the items I wanted to load share.<\/span><\/p>\n<table style=\"width: 100%;\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td style=\"text-align: left;\" width=\"50%\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><strong>Buy or Rent Propane Tanks<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Since we don\u2019t have access to natural gas we purchased a whole house generator that operates off of propane gas. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">In researching having propane tanks installed, I learned that I could either buy the tanks outright, or rent them. I chose to buy the propane tanks, two 120 gallon tanks, rather than rent. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">The cost of the two tanks came to around $1,150. However, by buying the tanks I get to purchase propane gas at less than half the rate than if I were to rent the tanks.\u00a0<\/span><\/td>\n<td style=\"text-align: center;\" width=\"1%\"><\/td>\n<td style=\"text-align: center;\" width=\"49%\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/B00BBCCC3Y\/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325&amp;creativeASIN=B00BBCCC3Y&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;tag=wwwhomeadditi-20&amp;linkId=d78f695ffbb2efd4dd827ff883a5b4ee\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/\/ws-na.amazon-adsystem.com\/widgets\/q?_encoding=UTF8&amp;MarketPlace=US&amp;ASIN=B00BBCCC3Y&amp;ServiceVersion=20070822&amp;ID=AsinImage&amp;WS=1&amp;Format=_SL250_&amp;tag=wwwhomeadditi-20\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"border: none !important; margin: 0px !important;\" src=\"\/\/ir-na.amazon-adsystem.com\/e\/ir?t=wwwhomeadditi-20&amp;l=am2&amp;o=1&amp;a=B00BBCCC3Y\" alt=\"\" width=\"1\" height=\"1\" border=\"0\" \/><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">For example, I am now paying between $1.50 and $1.70 per gallon by owning the tanks. I was paying, when renting just one tank, over $3.50 gallons. So seriously consider buying the propane tanks when installing a whole house generator.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Note that you will need two 120 gallon propane tanks to reliably run the whole house generator. There will be insufficient gas line pressure otherwise to ensure the generator will always operate when required.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><strong>Placement of Generator and Propane Tanks<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Both whole house generator installation companies that I had come out to my property and assess the site for the generator were insistent about keeping the propane tanks relatively close by to the generator location. They recommend that only 15 to 20 feet should separate the two. The main reason for their recommendations was that trenching for the gas and electric lines is very expensive, and in some cases impossible to do if there are large tree roots in the way. So unless you are willing to pay a high premium for the generator installation, or don\u2019t mind taking out a tree or two, then expect to place your whole house generator and propane tanks fairly close to one another.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">So if you are looking to have installed a whole house generator on your property, make sure to consider the above factors when making your decision on what type of generator to buy.
