How do I test a zone valve to see if it is working?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><strong>Answer:<\/strong> Hydronic zone valves are used in hot water heating systems. Zone valves work in conjunction with the thermostat, a transformer, a circulator pump and the boiler. When the thermostat is turned up higher than the temperature in the room, the zone valve normally turns ON and hot water is circulated through the heating elements in that heating zone. <\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">See these two short videos to learn more about <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #0000ff; text-decoration: underline;\">Hydronic Zone Valves<\/span><\/strong><\/span><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"> and <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/homeadditionplus.com\/dev\/plumbing\/hot-water-circulator-pumps-video\/\"><strong><span style=\"color: #0000ff; text-decoration: underline;\">Hot Water Circulator Pumps<\/span><\/strong><\/a><\/span>.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">To test a zone valve, first turn up the thermostat to its maximum level and feel and hear for hot water circulating around the heating elements.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">If you do not feel or hear any hot water circulating around the heating zone, pull down on the lever on the zone valve to force the valve open. If the lever goes down easy, without any resistance, chances are the problem is not with the <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/homeadditionplus.com\/dev\/plumbing\/hydronic-zone-valve-video\/\"><strong><span style=\"color: #0000ff; text-decoration: underline;\">zone valve<\/span><\/strong><\/a><\/span>. If the lever is difficult to pull down then the zone valve is likely a problem. If hot water does not begin to circulate through the heating elements then chances are there is a problem with the zone valve, circulator pump or <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/homeadditionplus.com\/dev\/heating\/buderus-boiler-and-riello-burner-installation-review\/\"><strong><span style=\"color: #0000ff; text-decoration: underline;\">boiler<\/span><\/strong><\/a><\/span>.<\/span><\/td>\n<td style=\"text-align: center;\" width=\"47%\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-7077\" src=\"http:\/\/homeadditionplus.com\/dev\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/Zone_Valve_1-300x260.jpg\" alt=\"Hydronic Zone Valve\" width=\"271\" height=\"235\" srcset=\"https:\/\/homeadditionplus.com\/dev\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/Zone_Valve_1-300x260.jpg 300w, https:\/\/homeadditionplus.com\/dev\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/Zone_Valve_1.jpg 308w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 271px) 100vw, 271px\" \/><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">If there is one common circulator pump driving all of the heating zones, and the other zones are working properly then you can rule out the circulator pump and boiler as a problem.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">If you have a multimeter handy you can also test a zone valve to see if it is being properly powered by the transformer that supplies a 24V voltage to it. Set the multimeter to read DC voltage up to 50 volts.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Not sure how to use a multimeter?
