Any thoughts would be appreciated.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><strong>Answer:<\/strong> D.G., A frost free hose bib with an anti-siphon valve is pretty easy to operate and maintain.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">As you did, you just need to turn off the valve inside the home to the hose bib, and then temporarily turn the <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/homeadditionplus.com\/dev\/plumbing\/how-to-fix-leaky-hose-bib\/\"><strong><span style=\"color: #0000ff; text-decoration: underline;\">outdoor faucet valve<\/span><\/strong><\/a><\/span> on to drain any water out of the end of the hose bib pipe.<\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">After the water has dribbled out, close the outdoor faucet valve. Also, if you have a garden hose attached to the hose bib, make sure to remove it and store it away for the winter.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">In regards to the anti-siphon valve, or atmospheric pressure valve, you should not have to do anything to it. If the frost free hose bib was installed properly the pipe should tilt slightly downwards so water automatically drains out of it when you turn on the outside faucet valve. The cap that sits on top of the frost free hose bib should be hand tight. The only purpose of the cap is to allow access to repairing the valve if in the event it ever fails. The anti-siphon valve effectively creates an air gap in the <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/homeadditionplus.com\/dev\/plumbing\/how-to-replace-a-frost-free-hose-bib\/\"><strong><span style=\"color: #0000ff; text-decoration: underline;\">hose bib<\/span><\/strong><\/a><\/span> to protect a home\u2019s water supply.<\/span><br \/>\n<script async src=\"\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js\"><\/script><br \/>\n<!-- 468x60_below_Author_Name --><br \/>\n<ins class=\"adsbygoogle\" style=\"display: inline-block; width: 468px; height: 60px;\" data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-3988490936633155\" data-ad-slot=\"5936342260\"><\/ins><br \/>\n<script>\n(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});\n<\/script><\/p>\n<table style=\"width: 100%;\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td style=\"text-align: left;\" width=\"50%\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">More specifically the anti-siphon valve, or atmospheric pressure valve, on the hose bib prevents water that may be in a garden hose to not be siphoned, or drawn back, into the potable water supply within the home, in the event there is a negative pressure with the home\u2019s water supply.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">They are effectively designed to leak when a home\u2019s water supply pressure is turned off to the outdoor faucet, e.g. by turning the outdoor faucet\u2019s valve to the off position, or if the home\u2019s water supply pressure becomes negative.<\/span><\/td>\n<td style=\"text-align: center;\" width=\"47%\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-7058\" src=\"http:\/\/homeadditionplus.com\/dev\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/Sillcock.jpg\" alt=\"Frost Free Hose Bib with Anti-Siphon Valve\" width=\"275\" height=\"207\" \/><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">For example, if you had the far end of a garden hose lying in a pool and there was a sudden loss of pressure to the home\u2019s water supply, the negative pressure created by the pool water could cause the pool water to enter your home\u2019s potable water supply via the hose bib, if it were not for the anti-siphon valve.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">This would be a potentially unhealthy situation if the water was in some way contaminated.
