This can be no truer than with a deck. Sunlight and weather can quickly age a deck. They can cause the deck surface to fade or check, nails to pop up, deck boards to warp, and the wooden rails to cup and twist. However, with a little do-it-yourself effort you can restore your deck to a relatively new condition.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Tools Required<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Hammer and Claw<\/li>\n<li>Pressure Washer<\/li>\n<li>Pole Sander<\/li>\n<li>Rough grit sand paper and Nails<\/li>\n<li>Broom and Leaf Blower<\/li>\n<li>Stain\/Paint and Brush\/Roller<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p><strong>Step 1 \u2013 Sweep the Deck<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>To begin the process of restoring your deck, begin by sweeping it clean. If you have a leaf blower use this as well.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Step 2 \u2013 Power Wash the Deck<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Use a power washer to thoroughly remove dirt build up, pitch, and flaking sealer material.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Step 3 \u2013 Replace Popped Nails<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Use your hammer to remove and replace popped nails. Popped nails are nails that have worked their way up overtime due to the constant change of temperatures. Replace the popped nails with slightly larger nails to ensure they hold the decking material to the deck joists.<\/p>\n<table style=\"width: 100%;\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td style=\"text-align: left;\" width=\"50%\"><strong>Step 4 \u2013 Realign Twisted Deck Boards<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Using your claw, remove nails from deck boards that have twisted. Once the nails have been removed, realign the board using your claw and while holding the board into position, install new nails into the decking material. Place the new nails into the pre-existing nail holes of the decking material.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Step 5 \u2013 Replace Damaged Deck Boards<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>If any deck boards are damaged, e.g. splits or cracks, replace these boards altogether.<\/td>\n<td style=\"text-align: center;\" width=\"47%\">\u00a0<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-5300\" src=\"http:\/\/homeadditionplus.com\/dev\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/deck_sanding.jpg\" alt=\"Sand your deck and restore it to looking like new!\" width=\"272\" height=\"204\" \/><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p><strong>Step 6 \u2013 Repair Warped or Twisted Railings<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>If the deck rails are in rough shape, replace them with new material. I would highly recommend replacing them with composite decking boards as they will hold up for a lifetime.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Step 7 \u2013 Sand Deck<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Using a pole sander and rough grit sand paper, sand the deck surface down.<\/p>\n<table style=\"width: 100%;\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td style=\"text-align: left;\" width=\"50%\"><strong>Step 8 \u2013 Sweep the Deck<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Once the deck has been sanded sweep and leaf blow the deck clean.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Step 9 \u2013 Apply Deck Cleaning Solution<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Apply a deck cleaning solution to the deck.
