In 1993 the NBC updated the requirements for stair treads and risers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><strong>Stair Treads and Noses<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">The NBC currently states that stair treads must have a minimum depth of 9\u201d. In addition the nose of the stair tread cannot extend out more than 1\u201d from the stair riser.<\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">By having a minimum stair tread depth requirement of 9\u201d, the NBC believes that there is sufficient surface area for a person to safely step on it. Also, by limiting the nose length to a maximum of 1\u201d they believe that there is less likelihood of a person accidentally getting a toe caught on the stair tread edge and tripping. Stair treads wider than 9\u201d are allowed.<\/span><\/p>\n<table style=\"width: 100%;\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td style=\"text-align: left;\" width=\"50%\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><strong>Stair Risers<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">In regards to stair risers, the NBC specifies a maximum height of 8 \u00bc\u201d. By capping the stair riser height at 8 \u00bc\u201d the NBC believes that the disabled or elderly should be more capable of managing the staircase when climbing it. Note that this is a maximum height requirement on the stair riser. Shallower step risers are allowed, and when used in conjunction with wider stair treads, they can produce a set of stairs that offer a touch of elegance as well as increased functionality.<\/span><\/td>\n<td style=\"text-align: center;\" width=\"47%\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-4218\" src=\"http:\/\/homeadditionplus.com\/dev\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/Stair_Treads_Risers-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"Stair tread and riser requirements\" width=\"275\" height=\"206\" srcset=\"https:\/\/homeadditionplus.com\/dev\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/Stair_Treads_Risers-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/homeadditionplus.com\/dev\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/Stair_Treads_Risers.jpg 640w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 275px) 100vw, 275px\" \/><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><strong>Stair Tread Width Requirements (Clear Width)<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">In residential building the NBC and most local building codes require stairs to be a minimum of 36\u201d wide to allow two people to simultaneously ascend or descend them. This requirement is referred to in the building industry as the \u201cClear Width\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<table style=\"width: 100%;\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td style=\"text-align: left;\" width=\"50%\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><strong>Stair Headroom Height Requirements<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">In addition to stair treads and riser requirements the NBC also states that the minimum stair height to be maintained is 80\u201d (6\u2019 8\u201d).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">This height needs to be maintained throughout the entire length of the stairway.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><strong>Floating Steps and Spiral Stair Cases<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Floating steps, and in many cases spiral stair cases, have no visible riser, however they too must meet the same 8 \u00bc\u201dstair riser requirement per the NBC.
