Cross bracing helps to transfer heavy loads between adjacent <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/homeadditionplus.com\/dev\/framing\/what-are-floor-joists\/\"><strong><span style=\"color: #0000ff; text-decoration: underline;\">floor joists<\/span><\/strong><\/a><\/span> so that vertical deflection and twisting of them is minimized. Cross bracing floor joists also helps to prevent squeaky floors. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">However, it is typically the result of an improperly installed <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/homeadditionplus.com\/dev\/flooring\/wet-subfloor-during-home-construction\/\"><strong><span style=\"color: #0000ff; text-decoration: underline;\">subfloor<\/span><\/strong><\/a><\/span>, rather than the lack of cross bracing the floor joists, that is the main cause of squeaky floors.<\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">In older homes cross bracing of floor joists was typically done by installing 1&#215;3 or 1&#215;4 boards in an X shaped configuration, center span between floor joists.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Today prefabricated metal cross braces are commonly used. Cross bracing floor joists should be done prior to the installation of the subfloor. By doing so, you can make sure that the floor joists maintain proper spacing over their full spans.<\/span><\/p>\n<table style=\"width: 100%;\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td style=\"text-align: left;\" width=\"50%\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">When installing wooden cross braces it is important to take care not to split the ends of the 1&#215;3 or 1x4s. If they are split when nailing them their strength is severely reduced.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">If your floor joists or sheathing are constructed out of <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/homeadditionplus.com\/dev\/decks\/sealing-pressure-treated-deck\/\"><strong><span style=\"color: #0000ff; text-decoration: underline;\">ACQ treated lumber<\/span><\/strong><\/a><\/span>, then make sure to either use wooden cross braces or metal ones that are sheathed in a protective ACQ corrosive coating material or stainless steel ones.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Electricians and plumbers commonly knock out cross braces when running their wires and pipes along floor joists bays.<\/span><\/td>\n<td style=\"text-align: center;\" width=\"47%\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-4087 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/homeadditionplus.com\/dev\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/Floor_Joist_Cross_Bracing-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"Floor joist cross bracing\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/homeadditionplus.com\/dev\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/Floor_Joist_Cross_Bracing-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/homeadditionplus.com\/dev\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/Floor_Joist_Cross_Bracing.jpg 640w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Unfortunately more often than not they fail to re-fasten them back to the floor joists after they are done. So make sure to inspect the cross braces after the electricians and plumbers have completed their rough-in work.<\/span><\/p>\n<table style=\"width: 100%;\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td style=\"text-align: left;\" width=\"50%\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Solid blocking is an alternative method to cross bracing flooring joists, and preferred by many carpenters as it offers more rigidity.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Solid blocking is also commonly used on the ends of the floor joists. With solid blocking the same dimensional lumber is used as the floor joists, and the blocking is installed in between the bays. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">The blocks are staggered from each other so that they can be easily nailed to the floor joists.
