A <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/homeadditionplus.com\/dev\/product-reviews\/powder-actuated-nail-guns\/\"><strong><span style=\"color: #0000ff; text-decoration: underline;\">powder actuated nail gun<\/span><\/strong><\/a><\/span> helps immensely with speeding up the process of nailing sole plates to the concrete slab. Similarly nail a top plate to the floor joists above and perfectly aligned with the sole plate. A plumb bob can help to ensure the alignment of the sole plate and top plate. If you are not framing a basement wall that runs perpendicular to the floor joists you will first need to nail a few blocks of 2\u201dx4\u201ds in between the floor joist bays to create a nailing surface for the top plate.<\/span><br \/>\n<script async src=\"\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js\"><\/script><br \/>\n<!-- 468x60_below_Author_Name --><br \/>\n<ins class=\"adsbygoogle\" style=\"display: inline-block; width: 468px; height: 60px;\" data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-3988490936633155\" data-ad-slot=\"5936342260\"><\/ins><br \/>\n<script>\n(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});\n<\/script><\/p>\n<table style=\"width: 100%;\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td style=\"text-align: left;\" width=\"50%\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">After the sole and top plates are nailed into place you can then install vertical 2\u201dx4\u201d wall studs in between them. They should be placed on 16 inch centers from one another, starting from the end of one wall and working your way to the other. Both ends of the framed wall should have 2\u201dx4\u201d vertical studs. Again, they should be fastened to the concrete foundation walls with an adhesive (e.g. Liquid Nails) and concrete nails or Tapcon screws.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><strong>Interior Basement Wall Framing<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Interior basement walls can be stick built just as the perimeter basement walls. However, you may be able to get away with framing some of the interior wall sections on the concrete floor and then standing them up into place if there are no plumbing pipes or other objects that will need to be framed around.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">When framing wall sections on the floor build them about a \u00bc inch shorter than the height of the first floor floor-joists so that you can more easily stand them up. If you don\u2019t, you may find yourself having difficulty standing them up in place as they may get wedged between the first floor floor-joists and the basement floor.<\/span><\/p>\n<table style=\"width: 100%;\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td style=\"text-align: left;\" width=\"50%\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Also, another reason for framing the basement walls slightly shorter, is if the soil underneath the home has high clay content. If it does the concrete slab can literally move up and down with the amount of rain water absorbed by the clay. If you have clay soil in your region use L-Shaped steel framing clips to fasten to the framed basement walls and the first-floor floor joists. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">The L-shaped steel framing clips will allow the <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/homeadditionplus.com\/dev\/basements\/framing-floating-basement-walls\/\"><strong><span style=\"color: #0000ff; text-decoration: underline;\">framed basement walls to literally move up and down<\/span><\/strong><\/a><\/span> with the concrete slab as the clay soil\u2019s moisture content changes.<\/span><\/td>\n<td width=\"3%\"><\/td>\n<td width=\"47%\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2672 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/homeadditionplus.com\/dev\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/framing_basement_walls-1.jpg\" alt=\"Framing Basement Walls\" width=\"259\" height=\"194\" \/><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Once positioned in place you can then shim the framed basement walls to ensure a tight fit before nailing them. However, make sure the walls are level and square before nailing them in place.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Again, you\u2019ll want to use an adhesive underneath the sole plates for the interior basement walls, and you will need to fasten them in place with concrete nails or Tapcon screws.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Again, if an interior wall has plumbing pipes, electrical wires or other objects to have contend with then stick building is the better approach for framing the basement wall.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">To speed up the process of stick building basement walls I highly suggest using a pneumatic nail gun, such as a the <strong><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/B000A79HWA?ie=UTF8&amp;tag=wwwhomeadditi-20&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325&amp;creativeASIN=B000A79HWA\">Bostitch F21PL Round Head 1-1\/2-Inch to 3-1\/2-Inch Framing Nailer with Positive Placement Tip and Magnesium Housing<\/a><\/span><\/strong>. If you don\u2019t feel like spending the money on buying a pneumatic nail gun and compressor look into renting one. Besides speeding up the framing process, it will also help with nailing into tight places that you can\u2019t always do well with a hammer, a common issue when framing basement walls,<\/span><\/p>\n<table border=\"0\" width=\"100%\" cellspacing=\"2\" cellpadding=\"2\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td width=\"50%\">\n<h3 style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><strong>Boxing in Ductwork<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">If you have HVAC ductwork in your basement you will need to build soffits around them to create nailing surfaces for hanging the drywall. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Similarly, if you want to include recessed lighting you may also want to frame in soffits. Since soffits are not structural you can build them with 2\u201dx3\u201ds or even 2\u201dx2\u201ds. Soffits are built similarly to a standard wall. <\/span><\/p>\n<\/td>\n<td width=\"50%\">\n<div align=\"center\">\n<div style=\"background: url('http:\/\/homeadditionplus.com\/images\/Home_Addition_form_Ad_Small_rev1.jpg') no-repeat top; margin-left: 10px; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-top: 0px; height: 190px; width: 275px;\">\n<form action=\"http:\/\/homeadditionplus.com\/UHI-info\/Additions.htm#form\" method=\"get\"><input style=\"float: left; width: 80px; margin: 110px -255px 50px 165px;\" name=\"PC\" size=\"20\" type=\"text\" \/><br \/>\n<input style=\"float: right; background: url('http:\/\/homeadditionplus.com\/images\/homeadditionplus-btn-next.gif'); height: 34px; width: 91px; border: 0px solid #000000; ; margin-left: 0; margin-right: 25px; margin-top: 130px; margin-bottom: 0px;\" type=\"submit\" value=\"\" \/><\/form>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Run parallel top plates along the length of the ductwork, on each side of it, and then attach two end vertical stud members to them.\u00a0To ensure the soffits are built straight, use a chalk like to help with the placement of the top plates.<\/span><\/p>\n<table style=\"width: 100%;\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td style=\"text-align: left;\" width=\"50%\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">The top plates of the soffit attach to the first floor floor-joists and then the vertical members hold up the bottom plate(s). <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Then fill in the soffit areas with additional vertical stud members located on 16 inch centers. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Likewise, attach horizontal stud members between the two soffit walls to complete the boxing in of the ductwork.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Also make sure to use a carpenter\u2019s square and level when building the soffits to ensure their sides are perfectly square and level. <\/span><\/td>\n<td style=\"text-align: left;\" width=\"1%\"><\/td>\n<td width=\"49%\">\n<p align=\"center\"><script async src=\"\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js\"><\/script><br \/>\n<!-- New_300x250_051317 --><br \/>\n<ins class=\"adsbygoogle\" style=\"display: inline-block; width: 300px; height: 250px;\" data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-3988490936633155\" data-ad-slot=\"4202793463\"><\/ins><br \/>\n<script>\n(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});\n<\/script><\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">In addition, make sure to measure each location for the various vertical and horizontal stud members, as they may vary a bit along the entire length of the soffit.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><strong>Framing Basement Ceiling<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">If you plan to drywall the <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/homeadditionplus.com\/dev\/basements\/basement-ceilings-dropped-ceiling-tiles-vs-drywall-ceilings\/\"><strong><span style=\"color: #0000ff; text-decoration: underline;\">basement ceiling<\/span><\/strong><\/a><\/span> you\u2019ll need to fasten perpendicular to the floor joists either 2\u201dx4\u201ds laid on their flat side or 1\u201dx3\u201d furring strips. The use of 2\u201dx4\u201ds provides a little extra clearance for any plumbing supply pipes or electrical wires that could be running up against the bottom edges of the floor joists.
