Often the garage door header sag can be reduced or even eliminated by temporarily bracing up the center of the garage door opening and installing gusset plates between the header and the top wall plates.<\/p>\n<table style=\"width: 100%;\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td style=\"text-align: left;\" width=\"50%\">The garage door opening in this detached garage has a 1\/2 sag in it. We were able to determine this by nailing 2&#215;4 blocks on either side of the garage door opening and attaching a string to it. The space between the top of the garage door trim and the string at the far ends of the garage door opening was 1-1\/2 inches. In the center of the garage door opening, however, the spacing was only 1 inch.<\/p>\n<p>To eliminate the garage door header sag and sagging garage door opening we first removed a half dozen of the small 2&#215;4 blocks between the garage door header and the top wall plate above the garage door.<\/p>\n<p>Using 2x4s we then jacked up the center of the garage door opening to eliminate the sag.<\/td>\n<td width=\"3%\"><\/td>\n<td width=\"47%\"><a href=\"http:\/\/homeadditionplus.com\/dev\/home_addition_bid_sheets\/garage-addition-bid-sheet\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1586 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/homeadditionplus.com\/dev\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/Garage-Addition-Bid-Sheet-249x300.jpg\" alt=\"Garage Addition Bid Sheet\" width=\"249\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/homeadditionplus.com\/dev\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/Garage-Addition-Bid-Sheet-249x300.jpg 249w, https:\/\/homeadditionplus.com\/dev\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/Garage-Addition-Bid-Sheet-768x927.jpg 768w, https:\/\/homeadditionplus.com\/dev\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/Garage-Addition-Bid-Sheet-848x1024.jpg 848w, https:\/\/homeadditionplus.com\/dev\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/Garage-Addition-Bid-Sheet.jpg 956w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 249px) 100vw, 249px\" \/><\/a><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p>We then attached gusset plates between the garage door header and the top wall plate. This way the sag in the garage door header effectively got a permanent face lift.<\/p>\n<p>Finally we cut and installed new 2&#215;4 blocks (mini studs) between the garage door header and top wall plates.<\/p>\n<p>Prior to jacking up the garage door opening we spliced in new 2&#215;6 pressure treated lumber on the ends of the garage door opening and poured concrete into the cement cinder blocks to beef up the side garage door wall supports.
