Tips on How to Clean Windows

Spring is the Perfect Time of the Year for Cleaning Windows

By Mark J. Donovan

With warmer weather now on its way, it’s time to do some spring cleaning around the home. Chief on the list should be window cleaning. Clean windows brighten up the home and just make the house feel fresher. There are a number of commercial window cleaners you can use to clean your window, however, a simple solution of two parts water and one part white vinegar works just as well.

Summarized below is the key window cleaning steps for achieving streak free windows:

Note that it is best to wash windows on a cloudy and cool day. This way the window cleaner solution does not have time to dry out while you are washing the windows.

First put a large bath towel under the window you want to clean to catch any accidental spills and drips from the window while you’re cleaning it.

Next fill a bucket of water with tap water and just a few drops of liquid dish detergent. Then fill a spray bottle with a solution of two parts water and one part white vinegar.

If there are removable window grilles remove them prior to washing the window. Using a sponge or lint free cloth wash down the window with the water and dish detergent solution starting at the top of the window and working your way downwards. Also make sure to clean the window frame as well. In addition, make sure to clean both the inside and outside of the window and window frame.

Spray onto the window the water/vinegar solution over the surface of the window. Alternatively you can use a commercial window cleaner. Windex has always worked well for me as well.

After spraying on the window cleaner solution use either paper towels or a clean lint free towel to dry the window. As you dry the window, sweep the paper towels or towel in a back and forth Z shaped pattern and don’t forget to get in the window corners.

After wiping down the window stand back and take a careful look at it. Again, thoroughly inspect the window corners. If you still see streaks or dirt on the window spray it down again with the water/vinegar solution and then wipe it down once more with clean paper towels. Don’t be surprised if it takes you two passes to get a dirty window clean.

Again, make sure you clean both sides of the windows and window frames. If you have tilt in windows, cleaning the outside of the windows is easy work. If not, you’ll need to repeat the above steps on the outside of your home using a ladder.
