One way to spruce up your house’s entrance way is to install a ceramic tile floor. A ceramic tile floor provides both beauty and functionality to a house entrance way. A ceramic tile floor is also extremely durable and relatively impervious to water and dirt that are commonly tracked into a house entranceway. In addition, ceramic tile is available in many different shapes, sizes and patterns. Consequently there are endless ceramic tile entrance ways that can be designed.
Installing a ceramic tile entranceway is an easy do-it-yourself project that most homeowners can undertake. Ideally it is best to install a ceramic tile entranceway prior to the installation of the surrounding flooring. |
When installing a ceramic tile entranceway it is important to have a stable subfloor. Ideally the subfloor should consist of ¾” tongue and groove plywood that is then covered with a layer of ½” CDX exterior grade plywood. The ¾” tongue and groove subfloor should be screwed and glued to the floor joists and the 1/2” CDX exterior plywood should be screwed down to the tongue and grooved subfloor with 1-1/4” deck screws on 6” centers.
When installing ceramic tile use a high quality latex modified thin set mortar for best results. In addition, use a grout sealer after grouting the ceramic tile to reduce the risk of grout stains.
When installing a ceramic tile entrance way, consider buying or renting a tile wet saw. A tile wet saw will save you both time and money on wasted ceramic tiles. In addition, you will achieve a much more professional finish. Ceramic tile wet saws are not too expensive, so if you are planning multiple ceramic tile projects you may seriously want to take a look at buying one. I have owned one for the past 10 years and have used it many times. I know I have personally saved a small fortune in rental costs and improperly cut ceramic tiles. Likewise, my neighbors have saved a bundle when loaning it out to them.
