Installing a Toilet Tank Fill Valve is a Simple and Inexpensive DIY Project

In this video Mark Donovan of HomeAdditionPlus.com shows how to install a toilet tank fill valve.
To install a toilet tank fill valve first start by turning the water off to the toilet. There should be a valve that sits near the toilet. Simply turn the valve handle until it is fully in the off position. Next, remove the toilet tank lid, and then hold the toilet flush lever down until as much water as possible can drain out of the toilet tank. |
Then, using a bucket and a rag, sop up any remaining water in the base of the toilet tank.
Using an adjustable pair of pliers loosen up the nut underneath the base of the toilet tank that connects the toilet water supply line to the tank. After loosening it with the pliers use your fingers to continue to unscrew the nut.
After unscrewing this nut let it slip freely down and away from the toilet tank.
Then gently pull the water supply line away from the base of the toilet tank. You just need to move it an inch or so.
Again, using your adjustable pliers loosen the nut at the base of the toilet fill tank. This nut holds the old toilet tank fill valve in place. After loosening the nut, again use your fingers to remove the nut altogether.
Then, remove the clip and hose that attach to the overflow tube inside the toilet tank. With this done, lift the old toilet tank fill valve up and out of the toilet, and discard it.
Wipe up around the bottom of the toilet tank with a rag to remove any rust or debris near the hole where the new toilet tank fill valve will be installed. Place the new toilet tank fill valve into the hole, and adjust the height of the toilet tank fill valve by first turning it counter clockwise and then pulling up on it. When the toilet tank fill valve is at the proper level, per the toilet tank fill valve manufacturer’s recommended directions, turn the valve stem clockwise to lock it into the desired height. |
Next, attach the nut to the base of the toilet tank fill valve. The nut attaches on the outside bottom of the tank. Secure the nut snuggly with your fingers. Do not use the pliers to tighten it, as this could potentially crack the toilet tank.
Then attach the overflow hose to the toilet tank fill valve and then to the overflow tube.
Reconnect the water supply line to the base of the new toilet tank fill valve. You can gently snug up the nut that holds the water supply line to the base of the new toilet tank with the pliers, but again do not over tighten it.
Lastly turn the water supply line valve to the on position. The toilet should begin to fill up with water. When the water level gets to about ¼ of an inch from the top of the overflow tube, the toilet tank fill valve should shut off.
Flush the toilet and then observe the water filling up again in the toilet tank. If it shuts off again about ¼ inch away from the top of the overflow tube your job is complete.
