Window Stool Cap

The Installation of Window Stool Cap Provides Texture and Shelving to Windows

By Mark J. Donovan

Window stool cap is used for trimming out windows where there is trim molding wrapped along the top and sides of the window and a “shelf” and apron on the bottom sill of the window. This “shelf” is actually known in the finish carpentry business as window stool cap and is installed over the inside sill of the window.

Window stool cap is commonly used in larger rooms or where the interior trim and woodwork play a major role in the look and feel of a room or home.

A side benefit of window stool cap is that it provides a natural shelf for displaying knickknacks and other small items.

Milled window stool cap is available at most home improvement centers and lumber yards. Window stool cap comes in a variety of widths and has a groove milled section on the back side of it so that it can sit on the inside edge of the window sill. When the window is closed, the inside edge of the window stool cap butts up flush against the inside edge of the bottom window sash.

When installing interior window trim that will include window stool cap it is best to start first with the installation of the window stool. However prior to installing the window stool cap and apron trim molding, first make sure that the window jambs are flush with the drywall surface.

If they are not, first install window extension jambs prior to installing the window stool cap. The window extension jambs should be sized so that they extend flush with the drywall surface.
