How to Improve Home Air Quality

Whole-House Air Filtration Systems for Cleaner Air

By: Mark J. Donovan

Today’s homes are so well constructed and insulated that in many cases they can not breathe.  Effectively, what is happening is that the air inside the home virtually stays trapped in it and becomes stale and even unhealthy to its occupants. You actually may notice this when you come into a home after being outside for awhile and notice week old cooking odors or other stale smells.

Besides just the noticeable bad smells, your home may also being harboring more insidious and dangerous gases, bacteria, and dust particles.

These gases, bacteria, and particles can be generated from your home’s furnace, fireplace, and the out-gassing of synthetics such as your home’s carpeting and furniture.  They can also come from your pets. Also, during the warmer months when the doors and windows may be open pollen and other allergens can become trapped in the home.

To ensure your home breathes properly and that the air within it is clean, it is important that your home air heating and cooling system is properly maintained. This includes ensuring that the burners are tuned for maximum efficiency and that the filters are regularly changed.

In addition, there are room and whole-house air filtration systems that you can install in your home to scrub the air. These systems help to reduce the allergens and particle levels within your home

Whole-house air filtration systems are typically installed in line with your home heating and air conditioning system to enable clean air to be circulated throughout the home.

When considering the purchase of a room or whole-house air filtration system, look for ones that offer the highest in air flow and that capture the smallest of particles.

Depending upon your personal needs, some units, or the filters types that come with them, can better address specific types of allergens such as pollen, dust mites and pet dander. Others systems, or their associated filters, can also kill some types of bacteria and viruses.

Insulating materials prevent this from happening. Products are rated based on their efficiency. More effective insulating materials will be more expensive. The rating is known as the R value, which stands for flow resistance. The higher the rating, the more energy efficient the product. You will generally find this information on the package. If it's not there, ask the salesperson.

If your home has a fireplace, make sure you clean the chimney regularly to improve the efficiency of soot and ash going up the chimney versus in your home. Also, fireplace glass doors can help to reduce soot and ash from entering the rest of the home.
