Choosing the Right Bedroom Flooring

The Advantages and Disadvantages of Carpeting, Laminate Flooring and Hardwood Flooring

The flooring that you use can totally change the look and feel of a room, affecting the sense of warmth, romance, and serenity that you cherish in your bedroom.  Here is an overview of some of the most common types of flooring, so that you can pick the one that is right for your bedroom.

Carpeting your Bedroom

Advantages:  Carpet is a very popular choice in the bedroom.  It comes in a wide variety of colors, textures, and designs to match any décor and it can have a lovely, plush feel that adds a level of sensuousness to your bedroom.

Carpet is also relatively warm on bare feet, even when you first step out from under the blankets on a cool winter’s morning.  Finally, carpet muffles sound, helping to keep your bedroom quieter and more peaceful.

Disadvantages:  Carpet can collect dust and mites, which can be especially uncomfortable for allergy sufferers.  Stains set in easily, and regular vacuuming and steam cleaning is a must.

Laminate Flooring in the Bedroom

Advantages:  Laminate flooring is a more affordable alternative to true hardwood floors.  It is more stain, scratch, warp, and dent resistant than true wood floors, and often has much of the same beauty.  It is very durable, oftentimes looking great 15 years after installation, and is easy to install.

Disadvantages:  Laminate flooring is an artificial flooring material which is made from processed woods and plastics.  Many people do not like the “fake” nature of this material.  Laminate can feel slippery, hard, and cold underfoot.  Laminate also adds less resale value to a home than true hardwood.

Hardwood Bedroom Flooring

Advantages:  Hardwood is popularly held to be the loveliest of all flooring choices.  The grain of natural wood provides a beautiful pattern that is unique to your own home.  Hardwood floors are stain resistant and easy to clean, and they do not retain dust and allergens.  Although hardwood may scratch or dent over time, it can also be brought back to full beauty by refinishing it.

Disadvantages:  Hardwood is the most expensive type of flooring.  Some hardwoods are harvested from natural rainforests, which is environmentally devastating.  You should always be sure to purchase hardwood flooring only from sustainable sources.  Hardwood can be difficult to install, and some pieces may be defective, further driving up costs.
